The General Satellite Corporation Constructing Russian Taiwan

On August 28, in the town of Gousev, an official ceremony took place in honor of the start of work in the “Research and Production Enterprise “CTS” and “Prankor” Llc. The general investor of these enterprises is the General Satellite Corporation Association. The product of the plants – STBs and TV receivers – will be in demand within the framework of the Federal National Program “Development of Digital Tele- and Radio Broadcast in RF for 2009-2015”.

The Federal Target Program “Development of Digital Tele- and Radio Broadcast in RF for 2009-2015” is functioning under the premise that Russian TV broadcasting will switch to a digital format within the framework of a unified broadcasting system.

The construction of the new enterprises for radio electronic manufacturing of digital high definition TV receivers, which started in 2008, is being carried out within the framework of the project “Territory of research and technical development – Technopolis Gousev”. In 2007 the company started production of digital STBs for terrestrial and satellite signal reception in Gousev. In July of this year the commissioning works were completed at two plants:

On the one hand the plants are intended to increase the volume of electronics produced. The Research and Production Enterprise “CTS” is intended to produce up to 3,5 mln digital subscribers’ STBs per year. The “Prankor” plant is intended to producing 4 mln cases for TV receivers and 800 thousand satellite dishes per year. Experts estimate the number of households and companies supplied with the new STBs or TVs to reach approximately 50 mln by 2015. On the other hand the new plants should become city-forming industrial enterprises, a trend which is in the best interests of the Gousev Authorities. The number of the plants’ employees is predicted to reach 1000 persons by the end of the year, thus making the Company the largest employer in the Region.

In summary for the year 2008, the following companies were considered by J’son & Partners Consulting to be the major Russian suppliers of digital commercial TV equipment (STB): Digi Raum Electronics (67%), Humax (3,7%), Amino (2,6%) и TopField (2,2%). The General Satellite Corporation has taken 17% of the equipment market. According to the report the domestic market for consumer digital commercial TV equipment has tripled during the last year.
