Russia offers Europe a free 3D channel Russia’s General Satellite Corp has launched a 3D-TV channel, available on Eutelsat’s Eurobird 9A satellite (at 9 deg East).
The channel will specialize in culture and travel content. Programming will focus on history, architecture, fashion, art, lifestyle, culture and natural history – produced and transmitted in stereoscopic 3D. 70 hours of new content will be produced by the end of the year. A series of performances by the Mariinsky Theatre will also be captured and the partnership with the theatre company will play an important role in the production plans of the channel, said a statement. On April 15, 2010 the General Satellite Corporation organized what it claimed was the world's first ever live 3D television broadcast of a ballet transmitted directly from the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall. Working with 3D specialists CAN communicate, the ballet was captured with five active (zooming) rigs, vision mixed, corrected and transmitted on location. For the first time in history, satellite TV audiences in Russia and Europe were able to watch a live three-dimensional ballet. The satellite signal was transmitted in a free-to-air mode which allowed every owner of a 3D TV sets and receivers to watch the event. At an event in London on May 19 2010, General Satellite, Mariinsky Theatre and Can Communicate presented a showcase of their joint 3D projects. The new 3DV channel can be watched in a 3D format using the specifically modified digital satellite receiver HD-9300, which has built-in control systems middleware (CSMW) for operator functioning GS 3.0, developed by the General Satellite Corporation. "We are among the first few companies in the world to attract investments into 3D content creation and we offer cutting edge technological solutions for television industry," said Andrey Tkachenko, the President of the General Satellite Corporation. Demand for 3DV will come from cable TV operators looking to deliver high-quality content to their subscribers, said GSC. GSC is a Russian development and production company, manufacturing a broad line of set-top boxes for receiving digital-satellite and terrestrial television channels. Its products and technological solutions are used in several satellite broadcast projects.
